Olive mill wastewater (OMWW) is the liquid by-product generated during olive oil production. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of OMWW on intestinal glucose absorption in mice, notably for treating diabetes. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is a medical test in which glucose is given and blood samples taken afterward to determine how quickly it is cleared from the blood. This test was performed in Male C57BL/6J mice weighing 20–25 g. Gavages of mice with glucose were performed after a 16-h fast using a D-glucose solution (1 g/Kg) without or with OMWW, in dose range of 0.5– 4 g/kg of body weight. The bleeds were further taken at 15, 30, 60, and 120 min after oral glucose administration. These experiments were performed at least with 6 individual animals. Oral glucose tolerance test carried out in mice showed that oral administration of OMWW decreased glycemia at all tested concentration, which is significant at concentration of 4g/Kg of body weight. These results suggest OMWW have potentially hypoglycemic effect in mice.
