Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) belong to the group of anionic clays. They are characterized by a stack of sheets positively charged and of brucite type [MII1-X MIIIX(OH)2]x+. The positive charge of these sheets is compensated by interlayer species containing solvated anions [Xm-x/mn H2O] x-. The chemical composition of LDHs can be described by the general formula: [MII1-xMIIIx (OH)2]x+[X m-x/m.nH2O]x-.
Indeed, they have high adsorption capacities and anion exchange properties favorable to the trapping of anionic organic pollutants.
These clays are applied as catalysts in the treatment of organic pollution and as adsorbents in order to provide a solution to agricultural and industrial activities that generate polluted water.
The carbonated layered double hydroxide [Zn-Al-CO3] was synthesized by the coprecipitation method at a slightly basic and constant pH. The material was obtained for molar ratios R = [Zn/Al] = 2, 3, 4, and 5. Calcination of these solids leads to the formation of mixed oxides which have the property of being able to be regenerated by adsorbing new anionic entities or by using them as catalysts for the degradation reactions of organic products which are found in the discharge water.
The structural characterization of the material was carried out by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (DTA/TG). Dosages of the polluted solutions were monitored by UV-Visible spectrometry.
