United Nations offices in Algiers were heavily damaged by a powerful car bomb on Tuesday, and some U.N. staff were casualties, a spokesman said. A spokesman for the U.N. Development Program, whose offices were in one of the damaged buildings, said they had been unable to establish contact with any of their staff in the hours after the 9:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) explosion. Ron Redmond, chief spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said he was unable to say whether there were any U.N. deaths in the main U.N. building or in the UNHCR building across the street.
